Introduction to the work

Musica ex Machina is an immersive sound performance in a documentary theatre format that weaves European early music, contemporary sounds, and delicate music-related discourse into a unified world. Bringing together early music instruments such as recorders and the theorbo with modular synthesizers and kinetic sound objects, three musicians create a small universe on stage. The performance unfolds through five structured scenes, including an interactive scene where the audience joins in the making of music, alongside four short documentary videos. Together, these elements invite audiences to rediscover the essential experience of “listening to sound.”

The audience’s ears will lead them along an intimate journey, moving from near-silent whispers to overwhelming waves of sound that dominate the space. Along the way, they discover how even the most trivial sounds convey meaning.

Through a complete immersion where every sense is awakened, participants are invited to experience fragmented sounds with ever-present individual textures-expanding into a rich, shared resonance, and ultimately discover the aesthetics of multifaceted harmony.

Musica ex Machina

Musica ex Machina traverses diverse musical and cultural contexts as an early music ensemble and interdisciplinary creative collective with roots. By weaving together Western period instruments, traditional Korean instruments, electronics, and found objects, the collective dismantles genre boundaries to create unique performances where "music speaks of music."
A meticulously researched early music ensemble as well as a creator of acclaimed original content, this dual identity sets Musica ex Machina apart. Exploring the oldest musical heritage alongside the most progressive contemporary soundscapes, the collective collaborates across disciplines to unearth and introduce rare, captivating music to the world. Musica ex Machina is an honored Official Selection of the Seoul Performing Arts Festival (SPAF) and the ARKO Arts Selection.
