Introduction to the work

Born from the bodily memory of a political demonstration in Seoul’s 2015, the piece follows a “political gathering”—the mass demonstrations that toppled a government. C'est pas là, c'est par là traces how a single body is unsettled by the presence of others and how a collective takes shape between them. It moves through the space between the individual and the crowd, testing what happens when one body becomes many.

The piece begins with a stone—many stones tied to a tangle of string. Performers and participants move through this web together, brushing past one another, giving way, negotiating space, and settling into place.

Eventually, the audience discovers what waits at the far end of the string: proof that something is created between bodies that no single body could produce alone. For GALMAE, the crowd is always greater than the sum of all the individuals within it.

GALMAE

Based in Marseille and Seoul, GALMAE is a performing arts company founded in 2017 by Korean artist Juhyung LEE. GALMAE treats performance as a mode in which strangers occupy the same time and place, and explores how a "we" assembles, holds, and dissolves—between artist and work, work and audience, audience and audience.
Moving across public spaces such as squares, beaches, car parks, and streets, as well as theatres and museums, GALMAE creates works that engage audience participation and the experience of being collective: C'est pas là, c'est par là (2018) gathers a crowd into a vast tangle of rope and asks them to undo it together. To the extent possible (2022) places dancers, smoke, and projected images inside a six-meter scaffolding tower that the audience circles freely.
As of 2025, GALMAE has toured over seventy cities in fourteen countries, supported by Institut français, Arts Council Korea, ONDA, and Villa Albertine. Two new works are in development.
