Introduction to the work

Gray by Silver's third album, Time of Tree, takes nature, time, and the collective “us” within them as its subject. Rather than treating nature as an abstract or scenic backdrop, the group set out to encounter Korean ecosystems firsthand—accompanied by the photo, video, and sound artists who work alongside them and with gardener Daegil LEE serving as their guide.

The ensemble relied on their observations and Lee’s curation, to shape the music in this work. This exploration and contemplation led to one guiding premise: nature as system—a vast structure in which coincidence and inevitability intersect endlessly, and life and death remain entangled.

In Eastern thought, the word “nature” (자연, 自然) means “what is in its own way.” The system finds its voice in the green scent of the forest, the silver shimmer of waves woven by the sea and sun, birds announcing spring, and cicadas carrying the fullness of summer, even amid the dense urban forest of buildings. Wherever the listener may be, Gray by Silver hopes Time of Tree resonates with their being.

Gray by Silver

Gray by Silver is a four-member ensemble comprising piano, voice, daegeum (bamboo flute), and drums. Since forming in 2016, the group has steadily presented a new direction in contemporary Korean music, working at the “gray zone” where contemporary art music, jazz, classical, and Korean traditional music meet. Moving beyond genre, they weave a wide range of subjects into narrative music. Their third album, Time of Tree (2025), won Best Global Contemporary Album at the 23rd Korean Music Awards in 2026. The ensemble has performed on international stages including the Lincoln Center in New York, Colours of Ostrava in Czechia, and the EFG London Jazz Festival at the Royal Albert Hall. At home, they continue to meet audiences across a wide variety of stages, from the KBS documentary special A Midsummer Night's Glacier Concert to Namsan Gugakdang and the Sejong Center.
