Introduction to the work

This showcase presents selected works from Two Voices, an ensemble project initiated by composer and pianist Iseul KIM in 2017. Bringing together Korean traditional and Western instruments—including haegeum, daegeum, 25-string gayageum, piano, and improvising musicians—the project creates an organic musical vocabulary where composition and improvisation coexist. Each performer plays an essential role in shaping the music through attentive listening and interaction.

The program explores themes of memory, displacement, and resilience through works drawn from Kim’s personal experiences. The Stranger (띄어쓰기) reflects on the sense of longing and alienation that accompanies life between cultures. Motel Surim, featuring gayageum performer PARK Soon-Ah, is based on the story of the composer’s birth and transforms memories of inherited trauma into a deeply personal musical narrative. Yeon, inspired by the Buddhist phrase Cheoyeomsangjeong(remaining pure amidst adversity), contemplates how to preserve one's true nature during life's hardships.

Through the interplay of diverse instrumental voices, Two Voices invites audiences to encounter individual stories as shared experiences of empathy, healing, and connection.

Iseul Music (Iseul Kim)

Uniting musicians from Korean traditional music, jazz, and classical backgrounds, Iseul Kim’s Two Voices is an ensemble project led by the eponymous composer and pianist. The ensemble creates a distinctive sound that moves fluidly across musical boundaries by combining the instruments of Korea—the haegeum, daegeum, janggu—with those of the West.
From 2020 to 2025, the project received multiple grants from the Seoul Foundation for Arts and Culture and the Arts Council Korea. In 2023, the ensemble released an album through the Austrian label Boomslang Records and was invited to perform at Austria’s Bezau Beatz Festival. Iseul Kim also received a 2025 grant from the New York Foundation for the Arts (NYFA).

Review
  • Iseul Kim’s concoction of modern jazz, Korean traditional music, and classical musics lend themselves well to that environment—thrive in it, really—and the pianist-composer brings it to its fullest bloom.
